Sausalito's hilly, water-front landscape affords a style of living similar to that of European coastlines. It offers an active lifestyle while surrounded by dynamic scenery and natural beauty (much of which is protected open space). And it is just minutes away from San Francisco's financial and cultural centers across the Golden Gate Bridge.
The springs in Sausalito were the major source of water for San Francisco for many years, and the hidden coves were home to whaling ships. In 1822, an English sea captain named William Richardson arrived in San Francisco and began establishing various businesses, which stretched across the bay to Sausalito. He supplied ships with firewood and fresh water. Through marriage to Maria Antonia, daughter of Lieutenant Ignacio Martinez of the Presidio, Richardson, received a Mexican land grant in 1838.
Rancho Saucelito (Little Willow Ranch), contained all the land southeast of Mt. Tamalpais and the lands now within Muir Woods. In 1856, ailing and in financial straits, Captain Richardson put Rancho Saucelito into the hands of an administrator, Samuel P. Throckmorton, and died two months later.
In the late 1800's, steamships and small boats began ferrying passengers and goods, including locally grown fruits and vegetables, between San Francisco, Sausalito and San Rafael. Trains met the ships in Marin ports to provide links between the coast and inland cities such as San Anselmo and Fairfax.
In 1937 when the Golden Gate Bridge opened, Marin began growing. During World War II people came from across the country to work in the Sausalito shipyards and at Hamilton Air Force Base in Novato.
Fortunately, through the years, Marin has attracted progressive people who support the purchase of land for parks and community uses. William Kent (Kent Woodlands and Kentfield) donated Muir Woods (between Mill Valley and West Marin) for a park in 1908. In 1971 conservationists pressured the federal government to purchase coastal property and protect it from development.
The town is worth a visit and your consideration as a most unusual, unique and beautiful place to live, just minutes from world-class San Francisco.
