Corte Madera ("Cut Wood")
Population: About 9,400 as of the 2000 Census.
Incorporated in 1916, the Town extends from San Francisco Bay on the east side of Highway 101 to Mt. Tamalpais on the west. Corte Madera occupies an area of four square miles of land, plus surrounding water tidelands.
The area was originally part of the Corte Madera del Presidio Rancho of Mexico and its mill which provided the lumber to build the Presidio of San Francisco. Like much of Marin, when gold was discovered and years later the Golden Gate Bridge built, San Francisco's families began building summer homes in the redwood forests throughout Corte Madera and Larkspur.
This peaceful community is one of the more convenient towns in Marin. In addition to the charming downtown area with excellent restaurants and boutique shops, two fine shopping centers border the stretch of Highway 101 running through Corte Madera (Old Town Corte Madera and The Village). Also,
The schools are among the best in Marin, which is a county noted for its fine schools.
Corte Madera is adjacent to San Francisco Bay and several wildlife preserves including the 204 acre Ecological Reserve and Ring Mountain Preserve, where hikers and bikers enjoy breathtaking views, bird-watching and wildflowers.
Residents also have easy access to San Francisco along 101 and the commuter ferryboats at Larkspur Landing.
